Sabahar: Ethiopian silk with a social thread
Ethiopia has a rich tradition of skilled weaving. The introduction of sericulture
has a great potential to augment the Ethiopian craft sector. Silk can be produced by
households and the spinning, weaving and dyeing provides reliable income forskilled
artisans.
The combination of organically produced, hand-spun "wild" silk, high-quality Ethiopian
cotton, and the rich and ancient weaving traditions of Ethiopia result in an exquisite
offering of textiles.
It’s all in a name...
"Saba" was the name of a famous queen of Ethiopia (also known as the Queen of Sheba).
"Har" means silk in the National language of Ethiopia - Amharic.
... and in our products
Sabahar produces scarves, shawls and decorative household furnishings such as throws,
table linens and wall hangings.
Our collections are named after strong and famous queens who reigned in parts of Ethiopia
during the period between 1400 and 1900. Culture, history and colour are part of everything
we make.
